The First of 2010

3 01 2010

Today I had the first shoot of 2010, helping a local Calgary girl building her portfolio. We shot out near Elbow Valley, just west of Calgary on Highway 8. The weather was stellar for a mid winter shoot. We lucked out with a temp of only -6 and sunny skies.  We used a couple winter jackets and some jeans as the outfits for today to do a nice casual lifestyle project. I’ve attached a couple photos from the shoot. You can check out the rest of the gallery on our

Facebook Page.

I shot most of the day on my new Nikon 85mm f/1.8. This lens is incredible. Much like it’s little brother, the 50mm f/1.8, it is insanely sharp – even wide open at 1.8. I used the ND8 Filter today to allow for some wide open shots. The depth of field capability is a blast. The Speedotron 2405CX Power pack and 202VF lights really held up in the cold as well. I wish I could say the same for the poor Battery pack we used for the second part of the shoot. At 2400w/s (full power, one head), pointed dead into the sun we managed to get 25 shots on the Speedotron before it murdered the battery pack. For next weekend’s shoot on location at C.O.P. we will be packing 2 Dynalite Battery packs and 1 Paul C. Buff Vegabond pack (used at today’s shoot). Regardless, it was a lot of fun today, just messing around in the reasonable weather. A big thanks goes to Peter Olson for his donated time assisting today. Would have been a lot more work without him.

Ryan.
